This year (2018) marks 25 years since the Web was made public.
British physicist Tim Berners-Lee invented the Web at CERN in 1989 to help physicists to share information. The world's first website was in fact about the new technology - giving users information about the new system which allowed them to create their own web pages. On April 30, 1993, CERN made the technology which created the World Wide Web, available to the general public. In 2013, to celebrate 20 years of the World Wide Web, the world's first web page has been dragged out of cyberspace and restored. Funnily enough, people's interest in the page was so high, that the site crashed shortly after it was relaunched! Click on the link to see a re-creation of the web page and what famous websites looked like in the 90s. |

The role of the audience is changing from a passive audience, to a more active and involved audience.
Audiences are no longer just consumers but also creators. Think about the last time there was a crazy weather event in Melbourne... in the news we see photos/ from people who have taken photos or videos using their phone and uploaded to social media. Audiences can also interact with their favourite shows by giving feedback on social media in the form of comments, likes, views and even voting for who they want to win their favourite reality TV show. |

In America a movement using the #DeviceFreeDinner was initiated by the company Common Sense - an advocacy and education group for parents. The original campaign started with a commercial in 2016. This aired during the Olympics and shows how devices don’t belong some places - including the dinner table. In 2017, Common Sense released another commercial featuring Will Farrell phubbing his family during dinner. This campaign has been successful at getting the audience to discuss the social issues around someone phubbing another person. |
