The Auteur Theory originated in France. It is argued that the director is the “author” of the film and we, the audience, can see reoccurring themes or visual cues to inform us of who the director of the film is.
This theory has been criticised as a film is created by a collaborative team. A producer or writer could also be seen as auteur. Another argument about this theory is that film series, including Star Wars or Harry Potter, could be seen as an Auteur even though they don't necessarily have the same director for each film. It is important to understand the Auteur Theory is just a theory and is a way of explaining a director's style. Keep this theory in mind when we start the analysis of our two directors. |

During this outcome we are going to be looking at two directors: Michael Bay and Wes Anderson. We will be watching key scenes from their films, looking at their unique/contrasting styles and analysing how political, social and institutional factors contribute to their creative process. See the links on the right two pages on each director.

After looking at film directors, we will look at two photographers: Cindy Sherman and Justin Bettman. Both photographers take portraits with props to communicate a story - almost like a film set. See the links on the right to learn more about each photographer.
